National Junior Honor Society at OSL

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a nation-wide program that “elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.” (About The National Junior Honor Society , 2019) Our Savior has a long tradition of student membership in the OSL chapter of the NJHS, as our school values and promotes the values and encourages academic excellence and community awareness and participation in each of our students. The National Junior Honor Society was founded in 1929, and now has more than one million student members throughout the United States, as well as chapters internationally.

In keeping with NJHS tradition, OSL’s chapter “not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.” (About The National Junior Honor Society , 2019) The National Junior Honor Society at OSL strives to encourage scholarship within the student body, encourage students to actively serve one another and their community and to be responsible, caring citizens, to endorse leadership, and to develop character within the student body.

In past years at OSL, the NJHS has presented students in grades 1st – 8th grade with Citizen of the Month Awards. This year, the NJHS is trying something new; instead of Citizen of the Month Awards, teachers will nominate students in grades Kindergarten – 8th for the Soaring Eagle Award, which will be given to students who demonstrate the Fruits of the Spirit throughout the Quarter. In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul lists nine specific behaviors – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control – that are the result of the work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life.

Quarter One’s Soaring Eagle Awards focused on students who demonstrated Joy and Love, and were awarded to Christyana Boyles, Peter Green, Abigail Turks, and Juliana Krieg during chapel on Wednesday, October 16th. Quarter Two’s Awards will focus on students who demonstrate Peace, Patience, and Kindness, and certificates will be presented in chapel on Wednesday, January 8th. Parents of the children receiving awards will be invited to attend chapel. Quarter 3’s Soaring Eagle Awards will focus on student’s who show Goodness and Faithfulness and certificates will be awarded on Wednesday, March 11th, during the chapel service. Quarter 4’s Awards will be given to students who demonstrate Gentleness and Self-Control, and will be presented during chapel on Wednesday, May 13th.

Our Savior Lutheran School is proud of our dedicated, responsible, Godly students, and their desire to enrich the lives of their classmates and those in the communities around them. Partnering with the National Junior Honor Society is one way OSL helps promote these admirable behaviors. The members of OSL’s chapter of NJHS is excited about our new Soaring Eagle Award! Congratulations to Christyana, Peter, Abigail, and Juliana for demonstrating Joy and Love! If your child is interested in learning more about the NJHS or joining, they can speak to Mrs. Krieg, who is the teacher liaison for the OSL NJHS Chapter.
