Kindergarten Through Grade 5
Our Grammar School has two divisions—Lower Grammar for Kindergarten through Grade 2 and Upper Grammar for Grades 3 through 5.
Lower Grammar School
At Our Savior Lutheran School, our classical education program for Kindergarten through Grade 2 builds a strong academic and spiritual foundation. Through a rich blend of classical studies and Christian values, our scholars are inspired to think critically, explore the world, and grow in faith.
Literature, Phonics, and Grammar
In lower grammar, scholars are learning to read through a novel-based reading program and phonics instruction. As they develop foundational reading skills, they engage with classic stories that enhance comprehension, vocabulary, and a lifelong love for reading. Alongside their reading, scholars begin learning grammar, including the parts of speech and sentence structure, laying the groundwork for strong writing and communication skills.
History and Biblical Studies
Faith is woven throughout the children's day, and they are introduced to the Bible through the beautiful artwork and prose of The Story Bible as well as Luther's Small Catechism. Scholars are introduced to key historical events and figures, presented through the lens of biblical truth. Our Biblical studies program teaches foundational stories and values, strengthening their faith and character.
Introduction to Latin and Cursive
In Grade 2, Scholars begin to explore Latin, deepening their understanding of language structure and vocabulary. Cursive writing also starts at this stage, helping them develop fine motor skills and fluid handwriting.
Exploring the World Around Us
Field trips around the Houston community connect classroom learning to the world, helping scholars experience the beauty of God's creation and the wonders of human achievement.
A Foundation for Lifelong Learning
Through this well-rounded curriculum, our scholars are prepared for future academic challenges while growing in faith, character, and wisdom for a lifetime of learning. At OSL, we are dedicated to igniting a love for learning and fostering a strong faith, preparing scholars for success both in school and in life.
Upper Grammar School
Scholars in 3rd through 5th grade continue to build on the skills learned in OSL's Lower Grammar School, encouraging Christian values and academic excellence. Our well-qualified and dedicated teachers work with scholars to establish the foundation for their education and a lifelong love of learning. Our small and caring community guarantees personal attention and support and encourages all students to participate.
Commitment to Balance
Students study the core subjects of language arts, mathematics, science, religion, Latin, and history, with their teachers through a variety of age-appropriate learning experiences and hands-on activities. Specialists enrich our students’ learning and development in the co-curricular areas of Latin, music, art, and P.E. Scholars attend a weekly chapel service led by the pastor in the church sanctuary. Upper grammar scholars enjoy daily (or twice daily) recess time outdoors on their own playground.
