Grade 1 - What to Expect

What to expect in First Grade...

 

Chapel is on Monday except for special holidays and weeks where there is no school on Monday. 

 

We will have PE 3 days per week, and classroom music once per week.  We will visit the library once a week.  We spend 45 minutes outside every day, weather permitting, to include a mid-morning recess and lunch recess. 

 

Religion - first grade studies New Testament

Breyer Stablemate Series

A variety of Holiday books: The Christmas story, Clifford's first
Autumn, Snowmen at Night.

Clara and the Book Wagon

Peter Rabbit

Towards the end of the year we will do a Fairy Tale/Fable unit, and we will read a Magic Tree House chapter book at the end of
the year.

English - We will be classifying sentences with prepositional phrases by the end
of the school year, we learn how to write 2 point paragraphs, we study how to
punctuate sentences, and capitalize first word in a sentence as well as pronoun
I and months, days of week, city and states.

Science - We have a Christian based science curriculum, which covers senses,
weather/seasons, health, animals, plants, matter, sound, space, push/pull

History - We start the year by learning the Continents and Oceans, and then go into Ancient History (history of Mesopotamia and Egypt). We keep a history notebook.

Math - addition/subtraction facts, fractions, geometric shapes, writing/drawing
story problems

Read alouds:  I read to the class daily after recess, I read everything to them. 
Berenstain Bears, Clifford, Arthur, Golden books etc.
