Our Savior Lutheran School in Northwest Houston offers many different enrichment activities for our students.
Academic Quest
Each year our middle school students, Grades 6-8 compete in Academic Quest, an academic contest between Houston area Lutheran schools, hosted by Lutheran High North every year.
Students participate in open events where they compete against 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on written tests. They also participate in grade level competitions where written tests are taken on various subject matters as well as Bible knowledge. Finally, a team event is conducted in front of parents and students where a group of five 6th-8th graders work together against the clock to solve problems/answer questions.
Our Savior Lutheran School won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the Latin division at the Academic Quest 2009!
Outdoor Education
Every fall our Grade 6 students spend two nights/three days at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange, Texas. While at camp the students learn how to survive in the wilderness, build shelters, and use a compass to orienteer as a team around the campgrounds. They will even cook one of their own dinners over the campfire. Our students are able to enjoy archery, canoeing, kayaking, hiking to the historical monument hill, and swimming. In addition to the many activities, our students participate in inspirational devotions and bible studies, and praise God with song among God’s beautiful nature.
Science Fair
Our Science Fair is held each year in March. Many of our classes submit class science projects to display at the fair. Students in Grade 5 submit individual science fair projects, and students in Grades 6 and 8 submit individual science fair projects for judging.
History Fair
Also during March our Grade 7 students submit projects for our history fair. These are Texas History projects.
Dance
Mary Tiras of Creative Motion visits our campus on a weekly basis for several dance classes, each class is 1 hour:
Mary and her team introduce children to the exciting world of movement and music exploration. Classes include dance technique along with preparation for the big end of school dance recital. This gives children the opportunity to learn dance skills and experience the joy and excitement of performing on stage.
Dance classes include ballet, tap, jazz, and creative movement.
Gymnastics
Ashley Glass of Gymnastics Plus visits our campus on a weekly basis for several gymnastics classes:
- Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten
- Kindergarten - Grade 2
- Intermediate (Grade 3 and up)
- Advanced
Ashley and his team teach 45 minute classes designed to develop gross motor skills and fine motor skills through various exercises. Gymnastics lens itself to the development of a body and is a self-motivating activity which, through proper instruction can be rewarding in many areas. Strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and coordination are some of the physical rewards gained through gymnastics. The development of courage, self-control, self-confidence, and creativity are just a few of the many other rewards one can gain through gymnastics. No other training improves motor skills and body control better than gymnastics.
